THEME I: Never Lose Hope
NEVER lose hope. Throughout the story, Jaycee talks about how she never gave up, and did everything with hopes that she would someday be reunited with her family again. She talks about how sometimes, when she would be in doubt, she would look at the moon like her mother and her used to when she lived back home. I think Jaycee makes this a theme in her story, because she wants people who are going through tough times, and struggling with life, to know that you must always have hope. Hope is what kept Jaycee and her daughters alive, and HOPE is the reason why they are free today.
THEME II: Stay Strong
In the book, Jaycee explains all of the awful things that happened to her, while she was held captive in the backyard of Phillip and Nancy Garrido's home. She talks about how she would cry and cry all of the time, because she would miss her mom and family. She explains that although she had several opportunities to escape and run away... she never did because she had HOPE that what ever was to happen would happen for a reason, which ties into my first theme. She stayed strong for eighteen long years, and is now living happily with her daughters and family. It is important to stay strong, and never give up... because although at times... things may seem like the worst of the worst, you never know what is going to change, and what miracles are about to happen in life.
